API reference / Common / Engine types / TextEmbeddedObject

Interface: TextEmbeddedObject

An embedded foreign object in a span (docx w:object) — an OLE embedding or link (a Visio drawing, an Excel range, an Equation 3.0 formula) or an ActiveX control.

A wrapper, not a sibling of [TextDrawing]: CT_Object holds a presentation — either a nested w:drawing or a VML shape — and the binding to the foreign object, so the presentation is a TextDrawing like any other and this adds what makes it an object. Only the binding is unrepresentable as a drawing, which is why this is its own span variant and a VML w:pict is not.

The presentation is what paints: an OLE server is not something we run, and the picture the file already carries is what Word itself shows until the object is activated.

Properties

PropertyDescription
properties?
TextCharacterProperties
w:rPr — the object span's own character properties. Here and not on the presentation: the w:rPr belongs to the w:r that holds the w:object, and the presentation nested inside it has none of its own.
presentation
TextDrawing
The w:drawing or VML shape standing in for the object.
binding?
TextEmbeddedObjectBinding
o:OLEObject / w:objectEmbed / w:objectLink / w:control — what the presentation stands in for. None where the file carries a presentation and nothing else: every binding is optional in CT_Object, and a picture with no server is still a w:object.
originalSize?
ShapeExtents
w:dxaOrig / w:dyaOrig — the object's size as the server reported it, before any scaling the presentation applies. In points (the file states twips).
